Below is my final reflection essay of my experience throughout this course. This paper highlights my growth and learning journey from start to finish.
Over the course of this class, my writing has been challenged, reviewed, and developed. Through different writing prompts and being taught different writing tools and techniques, I attempted to incorporate it into my own writing. With practices of revision, I carefully analyzed my writing with the help of my peers to try and make it my best work yet. I’ve gone outside my box with writing, stopping the robotic appeal and instead adding depth and character to whatever I put out. With this class, I learned that you never finish learning how to write.
With this class came lots of revision. Each major assignment such as the Language and Literacy Narrative, Translation 1, the Synthesis essay, and Translation 2, was broken down into smaller sections that consisted of peer review from classmates, the Writing Center, and the instructor. With this, I learned and understood the power of peer review and utilized it for my writing. For the first peer review of the LLN, we were given a peer review sheet, where our peers would answer a couple of questions based on our LLN. A peer left me the comment, “I think the only thing I really want to hear is a little more about the job itself, because saying that language is important to the job then not explaining why doesn’t really give me any weight or urgency”(Muntasir 2025). I took this particular comment to help aid my revision. I agreed with my classmate’s comment and applied it to my writing. I then took that revision to the Writing Center, listened to what they thought my writing lacked or did well on, took what I agreed with and tackled my writing again. With the help of my peers, I was able to see my writing from another point of view and was able to make valuable revisions.
In this class, we were taught different writing techniques and strategies. Because of this, I understand the use of rhetorical terms and situations in my writing. Before the writing of the LLN, we were given a sheet with a breakdown of what rhetoric and rhetorical situations are. We carefully analyzed it in class to be able to apply it to our writing. The sheet breaks down what a rhetorical situation consists of: author, text, intended audience, context and exigence, and purpose. This sheet aided my writing in the LLN, helping me make sure I apply certain details to make my target audience clear and express the story I am telling.
Halfway through this course, we participated in a library research day. Because of this class, I know how to find credible and reliable peer reviewed articles, how to cite them, and incorporate them into my writing. The library research day gave us a course on how to utilize the CCNY library databases to find sources for our writing that is peer reviewed and reliable. The databases provide citations that can be included in a bibliography. On this library research day, we were taught how to use key words to help narrow our search to find exactly what we were looking for. We were provided with slides as a recap of the class and were able to use it to find citation for our synthesis essays.
In this class, we did two translation assignments that required we turn our essays into a different form of media. Due to this, I know how to use different genres for my writing. For my LLN, I turned my essay into something visual. I translated my essay into a video of someone sharing their poem that relays the same message. When presenting my translation 1, I incorporated some words directly from my LLN to relate it to the poem.
I have been taught many valuable things for my writing in this class. I have written in ways I would have never imagined. With this course, I was able to get more in tune with my own writing and analyze it deeper.
